Brief Introduction
The School of Chinese Language and Literature of Jiangxi Normal University previously was the Department of Literature of National Chung Cheng University, which was founded in 1941.The the school was renamed several times, from the Chinese Department of Nanchang University, to the Chinese Department of Jiangxi Teachers' College, and then, changed yet again to the Chinese Department of Jiangxi Normal University. The school system was formally established in 1994. A group of renowned intellectuals and scholars have been taught here, such as Hu Xiansu, Wang Yi, Yao Mingda, Xiao Difei, Hu Shouren, Yu Xinle, etc. With the unremitting efforts of several generations, the school has cultivated many talents and has developed into a key liberal arts department in Jiangxi Province. The humanistic tradition, upon which the school’s philosophy of education is shaped, has been regarded as the distinctive feature of the school. Other features include the distinctive disciplinary characteristics, the steady improvement of the quality of education and the high academic influence among similar institutions.
The discipline of Chinese Language and Literature has been the key discipline from the 8th Five-Year Plan to the 12th Five-Year Plan of Jiangxi Universities. The school has been granted the right to confer master degree in Ancient Chinese Literature in 1981. In 2005, the school was approved to be the master's degree-granting unit in Chinese language and Literature, and doctorate degree-granting in Theory of Literature and Art. The school was authorized to offer doctorate degrees in Chinese language and Literature as the first-level discipline in 2011 and obtained the approval for establishing postdoctoral research station in the same field in 2012. The school currently offers two professional degree programs in Chinese Teaching (started in 1999) and International Chinese Language Education (started in 2009, listed on the first batch provincial schools). The school has one humanities and social science key research base in institutions of higher education of Jiangxi Province (Research Center of Contemporary Forms of Literature and Art), and one key research base of philosophy and social sciences of Jiangxi Province (Narratology Research Center). Over the years, with the advantages of development, coordinated development and unique development, the Chinese Language and literature of the school has made great achievements, among which, the research of narratology and the study of contemporary literary criticism get better reputations in the national academic communities.
The school offers two undergraduate programs: Chinese Language and Literature (teaching profession) and International Chinese Language Education. The school has 8 teaching and research sections: Theory of Literature and Art, Chinese, Ancient Chinese Literature, Chinese Contemporary Literature, Foreign Literature, Chinese Education, Writing, International Chinese Education. Chinese Language and Literature was listed on the first batch of brand programs in Jiangxi Province, and was identified as one of China’s Characteristic Major Construction of the Ministry of Education in 2007. Founded in 2003, International Chinese Language Education is a key characteristic major of the University, and it has begun to enroll foreign undergraduate students in 2016. The school has one national teaching team, five provincial-level quality courses, and two provincial-level boutique resource sharing courses. Based on the disciplines, Chinese Language and Literature (teaching profession) and International Chinese Language Education have been built into strong majors in Jiangxi Province. In the comprehensive evaluation of undergraduate courses in colleges and universities in 2015 and 2016,the two disciplines ranked NO.1 in Jiangxi Province.
In the past five years, teachers of the school have published more than 400 papers in academic journals at home and abroad. Nearly 30 research works (including one works of National Library of Social Sciences) and 8 textbooks are published. The teachers preside over more than 20 items of National Social Science Fund projects (including one major projects, three key projects). Besides that, our teachers also preside over more than 30 provincial and ministerial research projects including Ministry of Education humanities and social sciences projects and The State Language Commission projects. The teachers won 1 pieces of third prize for the outstanding achievements of Ministry of Education humanities and social sciences and won nearly 30 pieces of prizes of research achievements of provincial and ministerial levels.
At present, the school has formed a team of high academic level and high teaching ability with the reasonable structure according to the teaching staff’s age and research fields. The faculty is composed of 85 teachers including 16 professors, 38 associate professors, 10 doctoral supervisors, 45 master supervisors, 1 nationally outstanding teacher, 2 judges of National Social Science Fund, 3 winners of the State Council’s special allowance, 2 winners of the provincial government’s special allowance, 3 teaching masters in Jiangxi province, 3 candidates for Jiangxi “555” Talents Project, 5 candidates for Jiangxi Talents Project, 2 young and middle-aged experts in Jiangxi social science, 8 young and middle-aged discipline leaders in Jiangxi colleges and universities, 2 young and middle-aged key teachers in Jiangxi colleges and universities.
The school attaches great importance to personnel training following the tradition of education and the rules of education. Based on the idea of excellence education, the school has set out to comprehensively deepen the reform of postgraduate education and explore the innovative talents cultivation mode of undergraduates. In the past ten years, we’ve won 1 second prize of the national teaching achievement and 3 first prize of teaching achievement in Jiangxi colleges and universities. Now there’re 1155 undergraduates, 381 postgraduates including 31 Ph.D. candidates (not including delayed Ph.D. candidates and in-service postgraduates). In 2016, 49 undergraduates passed the entrance exam of postgraduate, 30 of them passed the civil service exam,more than 100 of them got teaching certificate. The initial employment rate was high to 97.54%, ranking No.1 in the university.
The school actively carries out social service activities and effectively promotes the construction of local economic and social culture. The magazine Reading and Writing Monthly, founded in 1974, is a journal relating to the basic Chinese education. The magazine is an excellent journal in Jiangxi province and also an outstanding journal in East China region. Since 2016, the journal has created a new version of the Chinese education, which is based on the original junior and high middle school education. Chinese Language Resource Protection Research Center and Dialect Culture Education Workstation of the Ministry of Education and The National Language Council was established in Jan. 2017. Jiangxi dialect cultural resources protection, development and utilization are in full swing.
The school actively constructs the international idea of education and promotes the internationalization of education. Since 1970s, the school began to enroll foreign students. In recent years, we’ve effectively set up communication platforms for students and teachers to study abroad. Further more, many teachers have been sent to teach Chinese abroad and promote Chinese culture through the university’s platforms which are the Confucius Institutes of Madagascar Antananarivo University and Illinois University at Urbana-Champaign. The Confucius Institute of Madagascar Antananarivo University has been awarded the title of "Advanced Confucius Institute" for three times. Lots of outstanding graduates leave for teaching there as volunteers every year.
