General Introduction

The school of geography and environment, Jiangxi Normal University is founded in July, 2003.It was named as the Department of Geography in 1958.The School offers Msc. Programs in Physical Geography, Human Geography, Cartography and Geographical Information System, Regional Economics, Geography Teaching; and three undergraduate programs: Geographical Information System, Geographical Science, Physical Geography. The overall Geography discipline is recognized as key discipline in Jiangxi Province 12th Five-Year Plan, while Geography science is recognized as provincial famous discipline in Jiangxi province. The School was approved “2011” Cooperative Innovation Center: Major Ecological Security Issues of Jiangxi Province and Monitoring Implementation.

The school hosted more than 700 full-time students, including 600 undergraduates and 120 postgraduate students. Among the 64 faculty members in the School,52 are full time teachers, 12 are full professors, 18 are associate professors, in addition, Wang Yeqiao, is The Recruitment program of Global Experts.

The faculty members have engaged in about 100 projects in differentiated areas since 2003, including international collaboration projects, projects sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation, and those entrusted by local governments. The total research fund exceeded 30 million.

By now, the school has a strong exchange and communication with universities, academic and research institutions both domestic and abroad, which has further enhanced the educational level and academic reputation, laid a solid foundation for the subject construction and development. The Key Laboratory of Poyang Lake Wetland and Watershed was established in 2003 relying on the school. The Key Laboratory has been dedicating its efforts in the research on Poyang Lake ecosystems through various concentration including lake wetland ecological and environment health, integrated river basin management and regional development, diversity and biological resources utilization, spatial-temporal monitoring of wetland and watershed by remote sensing and spatial information modeling. The school takes the key laboratory as an opportunity, take the complex systems of the Poyang Lake Basin as the research object, and closely combination with the National strategic planning of construction of the Poyang lake ecological economic zone. Actively developing utilization of resource and environmental evolution, natural disasters, territorial control, population and urbanization, regional development and other theory and practice researches, especially focusing on the Poyang lake ecological economic zone construction decision support services, carry out a comprehensive multi-disciplinary, multi-level and multi-dimensional research, and gradually formed research directions with a solid theoretical foundation and distinctive local characteristics, such as health and ecological security, spatial information analysis and system applications, making it become an important base for the study of Poyang Lake.

The study object of Geographical science is the earth surface system, a unified wholethat is formed by the interaction and mutual penetration among atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, biosphere and anthroposphere. Geographical sciencefocusing on the system of human-land relationshipstudies the law of development and evolvement of the earth surface and the relationship between human and nature (or environment) through spatial analysis, ecological analysis and geographic synthesis analysis. Basic levels of branch of geography sciences can be divided into sectorial geography and regional geography. Sectorial geography, including physical geography and human geography, studies the structure, distribution, laws of changes and developments of each geographic elements and human influence on them. Regional geography studies the combination of geographical elements within the area and their relationship of mutual connection and interaction in order to revealing the regional characteristics and illuminating the regional human -land relationship.

 Geographic Information Science is a new cross-discipline that integrating geography, computer, remote sensing and cartography, which not only involves implementing the Geographic Information System technology, but also more focuses on the researches on a series of basic questions arisen in processing, storing, extracting, managing and analyzing the geographic information.
Geographic Information Science covering a wide range of knowledge has wide applications and large social demands. The 3S (GIS, RS and GPS) technology that is an emphasized development region in our country now, and the “Smart Earth” supported by the technologies of 3S technology, internet of things and cloud computing are the research and application fields of this major. Graduates of Geographic Information Science should have the abilities of computer and 3S technology, as well as the knowledge of resources and environment, who can adapt to the needs of the “Smart Earth” times. They can not only engage in the researches on theories and technologies of the Geographic Information Science, but also can do researches on other professional fields such as resources and environment by applying the high-tech knowledge of this major.

Physical geography and resource environment is a discipline that studies the components, structure, spatial differentiation, formation and evolution of natural geographical environment, as well as the interaction between human and resource environment. This discipline plays important role in national construction and social economic development. Moreover, a deep knowledge on natural geographical environment and its dynamic change could help to build the harmonious relationship between social economic development and natural environment.
   Based on physical geography, geomorphology and meteorology, etc., this discipline not only functions as the core professional foundation for the majors, such as human geography and urban-rural planning, geographical education, geographic information system,etc, but also as the important foundation for the relevant majors of agronomy, forestry, environmental science, atmospheric sciences, geology, etc.

As a subordinate discipline of geographyphysical geographyfocuses on the composition, structure, space differentiation, formation and variation of natural geographical environment, as well as the relationship with human being. The master station of physical geography of jiangxi normal university, the base of talent training for geography in Jiangxi province,established on geology, hydrology, ecology, and environmental science, aims at talent cultivation of interdisciplinary studies. Major professional skills training is as follows:
1) Systematically to master some related basic theory, knowledge, methods and skills of geosciences, biochemistry, ecology, environmental science with a good scientific thinking and basic professional training;
2) To be capable of independent researches carried out, such as independent field investigation, collecting of geographic information, experimental design, analysis and interpretation of scientific data with interdisciplinary thinking.
3) To be good at language ability to express scientific subject, that is, to master a foreign language, to be familiar with the literature retrieval and to express skillfully scientific problem with academic terms.
4) To be capable of skillful application of computer knowledge on related subject researches, such as modeling, plotting and writing program.
Main choices of occupation at colleges, scientific research institutes, government departments, planning survey design, mining, forestry, urban construction, tourism, environmental protection, hydrology and other related departments. Geology, ecology, environmental science, oceanography, space science, biology, soil science, resources and environment science, etc, are the related disciplines.
Academic master station of physical geography of Jiangxi normal university was established in 2008. After years of construction, this station has a professional faculty with six professors and 16 associate professors, which focus on the following four research directions:
1)  Global change and regional response of global change, which include high resolutional stratigraphic research, the regional environmental changes, the response pattern research of regional environment to global change and regional environmental safety.
2)  Environment pollution and safety of agricultural products,which include lake environment evolution and lake environment health, environmental pollution, pollutants transferring and transporting, and environmental hazards, safety of regional agricultural products.
3) Lake, wetland and lake/wetland health:lake environment health, global change recorded by lacustrine sediments, changes of wetland functions and lake environment change under global change and human activities included.
4) Hydrology/water resources and water environment change: safety of regional water environmental,floodwater utilization, water resources management and distribution of single basin, influence of human activities on the water ecological environment and its response mechanism to global change.

 Human geography is the study of spatial differences and organizational structures of human activities or various humanistic phenomenon, as well as the relationship between human and geographical environment. Human geography focuses on the formation processes, structures, characteristics and development rules of human-land-space system, and plays an important role in coordinated and sustainable development of people, society, economy and resources. Human geography includes many branches, such as economic geography, urban geography, rural geography, political geography, cultural geography, historical geography, military geography, demographic geography, social geography, linguistic geography, religious geography. This subject mainly deals with the study of man-land relationship and location theory, the nature and discipline system of human geography and its development history, as well as the application of mathematical methods, remote sensing and GIS technology in various fields of human geography.

Environmental geography is a secondary master degree that our school sets independently. The post graduates training of this master degree is specialty focuses on the interaction and influence of human activities and geographical environment, including regional differences in environmental quality, historical development, evolution and prediction of environment, The occurrence, distribution, migration, transformation and self-purification of environmental pollutants, the rational use and protection of natural resources and so on. At present, we set three research directions: ecological restoration and reconstruction of degraded ecosystems, environmental change and ecosystem response, environmental planning and management. This professional has six master tutor (including 3 professors, 2 associate professors,which 4 of them recevied PhD), all assume the national and provincial research projects. The professional knowledge which graduate students gained can be widely used in human production activities such as agricultural production, marine industry, water conservancy and climatic conditions in human settlements (cities, towns and villages). Graduates can continue to study doctor graduate of domestic and foreign related professional, or mainly engaged in environmental protection, water conservancy, municipal, transportation, forestry and urban and rural planning and other management departments, university, research institutes, design institutes, companies and large enterprises and other units related work.

Ecology is a first-level discipline of science, focusing on exploring the relationship organisms and environment, which plays a vital role in improving the ecological environment that our human beings rely on. Recently, with the rapid development of social economy and science & technology, ecology and its related branching disciplines increasingly concerned by both government and the public, requires more talents to these fields. The First-level master degree station in ecology at Jiangxi Normal University was constructed by both College of Life Science and School of Geography and Environment. The school of Geography and Environment mainly recruit master graduate student in the watershed ecology field.
Watershed ecology was based on landscape changes in Poyang Lake undergoing climate change, anthropogenic disturbances, the changes in ecosystem functioning, the fundamentals on human effects, the scientific planning of ecosystems in order to seek the restoration strategy, reconstruction and protection on damaged ecosystems. It mainly focuses on the following researches: (1) Studying both the macro and micro-scaling aspect on the impact of human disturbances on from molecular to ecosystem, and looking for its basic laws and toxic mechanisms, in order to restore and remediate the environment, and thus achieve the sustainable use of natural resources. (2) Uncovering collaborative development laws of natural and humanistic system, and focusing on the structure, function and change of watershed landscape, scientific planning and effective management of landscape, so as to achieve regional socio-economic sustainable development and ecosystem management.
The main fields of graduate employment are in resource utilization, territorial management, urban planning, tourism management, etc. Specialized fields for employment may include universities, high school, government departments, research institutions, planning survey and design departments, as well as land, agriculture, forestry, water conservancy and electric power, communications, urban construction, tourism and other enterprises engaged in ecology-related areas of teaching, research and management.
The main related branching disciplines are: ecology, biology, geography, resource science, environmental science, management science, economics and so on.
